Prof. Promise Mebine, the director of the National Mathematical Centre, has appealed to the National Universities Commission to modify the center’s establishment act and elevate it to the status of a university.
Mebine said that transforming the center into the University of Mathematical Sciences would support the teaching and learning of courses related to mathematics. She made this statement on Friday in Abuja at the conclusion of a workshop held at the center.
Mebine claims the center was founded in 1988 and has 127 hectares of rich land, but it hasn’t yet completed its mission.
“The center needs to be converted into the National University of Mathematical Sciences in order to effectively fulfill its mandate,” he stated.
Mebine declared, “Postgraduate, master’s, and PhD programs are what we want to offer instead of undergraduate courses.
“Mathematics, Computer Science, Theoretical Physics, Statistics, and Mathematical Sciences Education” are the five programs offered by the center, he clarified.
Mebine continued by pointing out that the center had sent a letter to the NUC outlining the reasons it required an upgrade.
Dr. Jimoh Ajani, who spoke at the event on behalf of NUC acting Executive Secretary Chris Maiyaki, mentioned that the NUC would examine the center’s request.
He also praised President Bola Tinubu for his abiding passion for the field of education.
