In the fight against human trafficking, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, or NAPTIP, has commended all of its allies and stated that their combined efforts are yielding fruitful outcomes.
This was disclosed in Abuja on Tuesday at the International Conference on Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants, TIPSOM, by the agency’s Director-General, Prof. Fatima Waziri-Azi.
The International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policy, or FIIAPP, provided funding for the conference’s planning.
Represented by Mr. Hassan Tahir, the agency’s Director of Legal and Prosecution, Waziri-Azi insisted that NAPTIP’s notable achievements in the areas of victim rescue and rehabilitation were made possible by partner cooperation.
She said that during the previous 20 years, the organization had been able to save and rehabilitate 21,181 victims, and that 639 people traffickers had been prosecuted and found guilty thanks to the efforts of NAPTIP.
“We have already achieved 65 convictions in 2023, and last year (2022) we secured 80 convictions—the most since the agency’s founding.
“These figures include the conviction of a complicit government official involved in facilitating foreign travels which promote prostitution, as well as the conviction of a high-profile trafficker who trafficked 12 girls to Belgium,” the speaker stated.
