In Yobe State, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said that during the previous 12 months, it had documented at least 260 incidents of rape and violations of human rights.
While addressing reporters on the celebration of the 2023 International Human Rights Day and the 16 Days of Activism against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence held in Damaturu, the state capital, Yobe State’s commission coordinator, Labaran Babangida, made this statement.
He said that miscommunication, rape, and spouses’ failure to fulfill their financial responsibilities account for the majority of instances.
“We have 260 complaints in backlog, but over 200 of these are related to the issue of rights violations against women and girls,” he stated.
Regarding conviction, the state coordinator pointed out that the government bore the majority of the obligation for both prosecution and conviction. Therefore, in order to make accurate convictions, some gaps must be filled.
“The judiciary, for example, serves as a significant benchmark for litigations, and as such, the government should fill in these gaps to guarantee that justice is served,” Babangida continued.
