According to Dr. Olubusola Alagbe-Briggs, President of the Nigerian Society of Anaesthetists, more than 400 consultant anesthetists have left Nigeria for better opportunities in the past two years. This information was released in Gombe on Wednesday.
In an interview with reporters outside the society’s 31st annual scientific conference, Alagbe-Briggs stated that the reason immigrant anesthetists left Nigeria was to find a better practicing environment.
Because of the unique nature of their services, anesthetists, according to her, are the most in-demand specialists abroad.
Due to the intense, focused, and acute nature of the work, anesthetists are in high demand worldwide.
“Now, we only have 800 members, compared to roughly 1,200 in the past.
“Those here in Nigeria who are anesthetists are being drawn to those countries that are short on them.”
“We are investigating ways in which we may contribute to the enhancement of cancer care; our areas of expertise include pain management, emergency care, critical care, and the operating stage.
“The best professionals are Nigerians. Other nations are vying for them.
“Until their welfare and the equipment they have access to are improved upon, medical professionals and other professionals will continue to emigrate,” the speaker stated.
Alagbe-Briggs emphasized that better welfare and the availability of suitable equipment were necessary for bettering medical services and practice.
According to her, the goal of the conference was to guarantee that members of the society will always be learning new things in order to improve the services they provide.
According to Alagbe-Briggs, “we are in Gombe to brainstorm on how to improve our specialties in line with the conference theme, learn from one another, and share research outcomes.”
The focus of the meeting is “Pre-operative care for patients with cancer and anesthesia.”
