The Federal Government of Nigeria has revealed its intention to provide food for its citizens in the upcoming year.
The FG stated that it is aiming to produce about 31 million metric tons of grains by 2024 through the Ministry of Agriculture.
It claimed that this was a component of its initiatives to tackle President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s food security issue and fight food inflation nationwide.
The federal government has set aside five crops for 2024, according to Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security Aliyu Abdullahi. He also revealed that over 300,000 worth of seeds have been given to farmers during the opening session of the 6th edition of Seed Connect Conference and Exhibition on Wednesday.
“In 2024, Nigeria will require 312,555.69MT of seeds for the five major crops of rice, maize, wheat, soybeans, and sorghum. This amount of seeds is expected to yield nearly 31 million Mt of grains,” he stated.
The Ministry has provided a number of essential avenues for resolving the issues around food security. Short-term, intermediate-term, and long-term activities are condensed from these routes.
“We started farming in Jigawa State last Saturday, November 25, 2023, and one of our immediate priorities is the certification of available planting material for some food security crops in the dry season of 2023/2024.”
