In Africa, men commit suicide at a higher rate than women, according to Dr. Naeem Dalal, Advisor for Non-communicable Diseases, Injuries, and Mental Health at the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
According to reports, Dalal made these remarks on Tuesday during the International Conference on Public Health in Africa in Lusaka, Zambia, on the fringes of a concurrent session on juvenile mental health.
He emphasized the need to dispel cultural myths that discourage African males from getting support for their emotional and mental health.
Dalal pointed out that it is imperative to eradicate cultural preconceptions because data indicates that a greater number of males commit suicide in Africa.
“There is a higher rate of active suicide among men,” he stated.
There are two things we need to be aware of while discussing suicide. Suicide can be classified as either passive or active.
