In their 3-0 victory over Everton, Manchester United’s captain, Bruno Fernandes, gave teammate Marcus Rashford the opportunity to take a penalty. He explained why.
Alejandro Garnacho had opened the scoring with a stunning overhead kick to put the Red Devils ahead.
Following the determination by VAR that Ashley Young had tripped Anthony Martial in the box, the visitors were given a penalty.
Rashford was given the ball to take the penalty kick by Fernandes, the official taker of penalties.
Stepping forward, Rashford scored his second goal of the year by slotting the ball past Jordan Pickford.
After thereafter, Martial sealed the win for United by scoring the third goal late in the game.
Fernandes gave Sky Sports an explanation for his choice, saying, “Because Marcus needed his goal, he needed a bit of confidence.”
“He has a great ability to take penalties.” Marcus executed that penalty flawlessly, as I was certain he could score it.
“I believe it is a necessary component of their game for strikers and wingers to score goals. It seemed as though Marcus could take on anyone.
