Oby Ezekwesili, a former minister of education, charged that Senate President Godswill Akpabio was undermining democracy in Nigeria.
Ezekwesili asserted that Akpabio shouldn’t have been elected Senate President because he is attempting to undermine Nigerian democracy.
She was responding to yesterday’s fracas in the Senate over the nomination of Minority Leaders.
Following Akpabio’s appointment of Senator Osita Ngwu (PDP Enugu West) as Minority Whip and Senator Abba Morro (PDP Benue South) as the new Senate Minority Leader, there was a small drama.
They took the position of Senators Darlington Nwokocha, who represented Abia Central, and Simon Mwadkwon, who had previously represented Plateau North.
Nwokocha of the Labour Party, LP, served as the Minority Whip, whereas Mwadkwon, the previous Minority Leader, is a member of the PDP.
There was a commotion on the Red Chamber floor as soon as the Senate President named the new Minority leaders since certain LP senators were against the news.
The irate senators said that other political parties that make up the minority in the senate had not been treated fairly in the nomination process.
Senator Tony Nwoye of Anambra North screamed at Akpabio, “Are we your slaves, how can you be choosing minority leaders for us?” after rejecting the nomination.
In response, Ezekwesili said that Akpabio and a few other members of the “political class” were attempting to control Nigeria’s democracy.
She wrote on X: “Our rapidly deteriorating Nigerian democracy appears to have been further targeted by @Senator_Akpabio, who never should have been holding the office of Senator, let alone “Senate President.” If not for the corruption of the nation’s judiciary, @NGCourtofAppea, which has blatantly disregarded caution and allowed itself to be manipulated and taken over by opulent politicians, this would never have happened. Unfortunately, Mr. Akpabio has become entangled in the web of Hubris.
“We ought to impart to him and his group of Democracy Destroyers the sage advice and illustrious remarks of Marianne Williamson:
“Empires are inherently unsustainable due to their arrogance, which leads them to believe they are unbreakable.
Meanwhile, it was encouraging to see voices from the opposition parties finally acting in a way that democracy requires. Bravo to Senators @SenatorNwoye and @ireti_kingibe of the Labor Party.
“As legislators representing the people of Nigeria, raise your collective voice on all issues that impact the citizens who elected you.”
We anticipated you to do what you did with those outrageous Luxury SUVs that you have or are yet to acquire.
“You people holding the People’s Mandate have the ability to guide us out of this “Monopoly Democracy” of political class misbehavior, which is currently personified by Mr. Akpabio and his associates.”
