INEC and IGP are urged to prosecute officials implicated in electoral fraud in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa.
Mahmood Yakubu, the INEC Chairman, and Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police, have been tasked with looking into allegations of electoral fraud by electoral officials during the recently concluded off-cycle governorship elections in Kogi, Bayelsa, and Imo State.
The League for Social Justice, a civil society organization, urged INEC personnel who were seen using pre-printed ballots during the election to stop doing so.
The group’s Chief Legal Officer, Maduabuchi Idam, made the request in a petition addressed to Egbetokun and Yakubu.
Idam stated that the group would see to it that individuals responsible for election fraud are looked into and brought to justice in the petition .
According to Idam: “The League for Social Justice, a civil society organization, has, through its Chief Legal Officer, Maduabuchi O. Idam, Esq., petitioned the office of the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Inspector General of Police, demanding, among other things, the investigation of the INEC officials who were caught with pre-printed ballot papers in Kogi State before voter accreditation on election day, and other electoral fraudsters in Imo and Bayelsa States.
“As a civil society, we vehemently denounce the actions carried out by the suspected INEC officers, characterizing them as a betrayal of public confidence. We also promise to monitor and pursue the petition in order to guarantee that the matter is looked into and the suspects are brought to justice.”
“We think it is possible to achieve a Nigeria free of corruption. Therefore, we won’t back down from our will to combat corruption and dishonest public officials in Nigeria.
