According to reports, Elon Musk’s internet business Starlink was consulted by the Federal Government of Nigeria on the establishment of job-creation initiatives including local hardware manufacture and maintenance.
This was revealed on Sunday by Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, using his verified X account.
He added that talks took place outside of the International Telecommunication Union-World Radio Communication (ITU-WRC) Conference, which is now taking place in Dubai.
According to Tijani, he had a meeting with Ryan Goodnight, Senior Director of Global Licensing and Activation at SpaceX.
The major topic of conversation, according to him, was how Starlink might hire hardware startups to make its repeater boxes locally and develop a program to train local installation and maintenance staff in Nigeria.
Great talk on the margins of ITU-WRC 23 with Ryan Goodnight, Sr. Director, Global Licensing & Activation of @SpaceX, who revealed that Nigeria is their largest market in Africa. We talked about bringing underserved and unserved Nigerians together as the demand for @Starlink in that country keeps rising.
I also suggested the potential to generate thousands of new jobs in Nigeria by collaborating with hardware entrepreneurs to make repeater boxes locally and implementing programs like Starlink’s certified installer/maintenance program.
The Minister said, “We intend to encourage every tech company to invest and deepen our tech ecosystem.”
Remember that Elon Musk declared in January of this year that SpaceX will be stationed in Nigeria.
