Five marketplaces in the Mushin region of Lagos State have reopened, according to the state government.
The markets were temporarily closed because of “environmental infractions, including indiscriminate waste dumping,” according to a statement made public on Friday.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, added that the state government’s decision to temporarily close the markets was justified by necessity.
The major market in Mushin, Ojuwoye, Awolowo, Irepodun, and Daleko are the five markets that have reopened.
“We made the decision to close the Mushin markets because we felt it was critically important to address environmental violations that were endangering the public’s health and the general welfare of the local community,” Wahab stated.
In response to Wahab’s remarks, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the managing director and chief executive officer of the Lagos Waste Management Authority, stated that authorities would take a break once the state “assumed a cleaner and healthier form.”
