Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has been designated as Aare Atayese of Yorubaland by the Islamic organization Supreme Council for Islamic Preachers South West Nigeria.
Alhaji Taofik Akeugbagold, the group’s chairman, made the announcement on Thursday in Ibadan during the opening of the Adogba Mosque on Iwo Road by Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto.
According to reports, the Sultan was joined by Alhaji Daud Makanjuola, the Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland, Edo, and Delta, and Alhaji Aminu Bayero, the Emir of Kano.
Speaking, Akeugbagold stated that Makinde was deserving of the championship.
He continued by saying that because of the governor’s alleged sympathy for Muslims and other religions, the organization had chosen to bestow the title on him.
Akeugbagold went on to say that the governor was given the title by the Council in an effort to uplift other members of the community.
“The society will be peaceful for everyone to live in if all Muslims can be doing the way Makinde did,” he declared.
“We want Muslims to provide the same courtesy to Christians as well.
“In order to foster harmony and love among all religions, we Muslims should try to remember what we can do for Christians when they do good to us.”
