According to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State, the selection of chairman and members of the state’s statutory commissions was done so on the basis of qualifications and merit.
In response to requests from the All Progressives Congress (APC) state chapter for the state governor, Ademola Adeleke, to revoke Hashim Abioye’s appointment as the chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), the Osun PDP made this known in a statement on Tuesday.
“The APC and others who joined them in their inglorious voyage ought to be purged of their ignorance that politics is different from state governance and administration,” the PDP stated in a statement signed by party chairman, Sunday Bisi.
Governor Adeleke has made appointments thus far that are unquestionably competent, capacity-driven, and merit-based.
“A lot of Adeleke’s cabinet members and other appointees are not politicians, and/or their appointments were made solely on the basis of their professionalism, competence, and talent rather than any political considerations. Therefore, in this case, appointments to statutory bodies are not an exception.
“In actuality, the majority of the agencies are so important that only qualified technocrats and professionals should be appointed.”
Abioye was a PDP leader and Governor Adeleke’s Special Advisor on Legal Matters prior to his recent appointment and swearing-in by the state governor.
The Osun APC condemned Abioye’s appointment in a statement made by its chairman, Tajudeen Lawal, according to reports. Lawal stated that the commission’s nomenclature with the appointment is the only thing that is independent about the organization’s operations.
The state’s Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) denied Abioye’s nomination as OSSIEC Chairman, citing it as a violation of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Constitution.
