In advance of Saturday’s governorship election in Imo State, the Presidency accused Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, or NLC, on Thursday of engaging in partisan politics in the state.
The statement was made by President Bola Tinubu’s Special Advisor on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who criticized Ajaero’s assertion that he was battling for the state’s workers.
Onanuga was responding to Ajaero’s encounter with Athan Achuonu, the Labour Party’s (LP) candidate for the state’s governorship.
Onanuga bemoaned in a post on X that the Trade Union Congress (TUC) had fallen for Ajaero’s false claims that he was working for workers.
“This is Joe Ajaero, the Partisan NLC President, in a HAPPY mood with Imo State Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate, Athan Achuonu,” wrote an internet user named @DavidsOffor. Because of his intense desire to see the unpopular Achuonu win the election on Saturday, this same Ajaero shut down Imo State.
It’s time for all Imolites to stand up to the tyrannical labor union leadership. Saddly, Imo State has been without gasoline for days, teachers and medical personnel are working without supplies, and other necessities have been taken away from them by Ajaero in an attempt to garner public sympathy against the governor.
In response, Onanuga wrote: “Joe Ajaero, with Labour governorship candidate playing partisan politics in Imo. And he claims he is fighting for all workers in the state. TUC surprisingly bought the lie.” “Now the question is Imo state the only place the off-season elections are holding, why is Ajaero picking only his home state? His position as NLC President has brought so much pain in the state. NLC has never been dragged this low.”
