Ahead of Wednesday’s nationwide strike, the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress have summoned an extraordinary National Executive Council, NEC, meeting.
In the course of the meeting, organised labor will go over the details of the strike that is scheduled in response to the attack on NLC National President Joe Ajaero. They will also go over the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed on October 2, 2023, by the Federal Government and Organised Labor, following the removal of the fuel subsidy.
Tommy Etim, the National Vice-President of TUC, revealed the summons on Tuesday.
A five-day ultimatum was given by organized labor on Friday of last week in anticipation of their protest against Ajaero’s arrest in Owerri, Imo State.
The labor centers demanded the arrest and prosecution of the governor’s aide who was allegedly responsible for the attack, as well as the redeployment of the state’s commissioner of police.
In addition, if their demands were not fulfilled in five days, the unions threatened to go on a nationwide strike.
Police detained Ajaero on Wednesday before the state-wide demonstration in Imo.
