Mahmood Yakubu, the National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, stated on Friday that Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi states are the most difficult to hold elections in.
Yakubu stated that the tough terrain and instability induced by political actors in the states made conducting elections in the areas challenging.
He addressed during an Inter-agency Consultative Committee on Election Security meeting in Abuja.
Yakubu also asked security authorities to pursue those responsible for insecurity and safeguard the safety of voters during elections.
The three states of Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi are not the easiest in Nigeria to conduct elections,” he remarked. The tough topographical terrain and continuing instability are exacerbated by negative mobilization by political players, particularly after the start of the public campaign on July 14, 2023.
Our message to politicians is that they must summon their candidates and supporters.” Violence and other undemocratic practices, such as vote buying, assassination of election officials, and disruption of the electoral process, must be prohibited.
“However, the security agencies bear ultimate responsibility for election security.” Our advice to security services is to take decisive action against election violence offenders.
“This is the most secure way to ensure a safe environment for peaceful elections and electoral activities.” In doing so, security officers on election duty should maintain neutrality while adhering to the established professional code of conduct and rules of engagement.”
