The House of Representatives has decided to look into the Minister of Works Dave Umahi’s directive to employ concrete technology for building roads.
This was a follow-up to a motion Zainab Bukar made on Thursday.
The implementation of concrete technology for roads, according to Bukar’s motion, might have a substantial financial impact on contractors.
She said that without doing a thorough analysis of the comparative consequences, the minister is pushing for the implementation of the road building method.
The lawmaker voiced concern that “the Minister of Works’ new policy on cement concrete pavement adoption without in-depth studies of the comparative advantages/disadvantages with asphalt may contradict technical specifications, potentially leading to contract breaches and potential arbitration and litigations during a challenging economic time”
In order to take further legislative action, the lower house instructed its Committees on Works, Environment, Finance, and Judiciary to look into the benefits and drawbacks of employing cement concrete for road building in addition to asphalt. They were given three weeks to complete their investigations.
