A new program by X, formerly known as Twitter, has been unveiled. To participate, new and unverified users must pay a $1 annual subscription fee.
This was said in a message posted today, October 18, on the popular social networking platform’s help page.
The program, according to X, is currently being tested in the Philippines and New Zealand. During the test, new accounts will be able to post and communicate with other users.
The announcement said, “We’re testing a new program (Not A Bot) in New Zealand and the Philippines starting today.
“New, unverified accounts must pay an annual subscription fee of $1 in order to post and engage with other posts. Existing users are unaffected by this test.
“This new test was created to support our already effective efforts to decrease spam, platform manipulation, and bot activity while balancing platform accessibility with the modest charge amount. It does not increase profits.
And so far, subscription services have shown to be the primary scalable answer.
The chairman of X, Elon Musk, revealed the rationale behind the yearly subscription cost in a tweet on Wednesday.
The fee, in Musk’s opinion, will lessen spam and automated bot accounts.
“True, you can read for free, but writing costs $1 per year. It’s the only method for combating bots that doesn’t prohibit actual users.
“Bots won’t be completely stopped by this, but platform manipulation will be 1,000 times more difficult.”
