Boost cooperation for safe, reliable elections
On Tuesday, an inter-agency consultative security meeting was held at the Louis Edet House, Force Headquarters, Abuja, by acting Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun.
The gathering was organized in advance of the off-season elections in the states of Bayelsa, Kogi, and Imo, which are set for November 11, 2023.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, announced this on Wednesday via a tweet on the Nigeria Police Force’s account on X.
Egbetokun emphasized the significance of sharing ideas among security services towards the maintenance of peace and order during election seasons. He was represented at the conference by the deputy IGP, Operations, DIG Ede Ayuba.
The aim, according to Adejobi, is “to develop cooperative strategies that will ensure the upcoming elections are secure, free, fair, and credible.”
Prior to the elections on November 11, a security consultation conference covered a variety of topics, including “intelligence sharing, logistical planning, in-depth analysis of potential threats and vulnerabilities, conflict prevention, technology and innovations, as well as manpower deployment.”
According to the tweet, the meeting is one of a “series of brainstorming sessions outlined by the force” and will continue to be held after the next gubernatorial elections.
At the meeting, the DIG warned political gladiators and their supporters to play by the rules and to abide by the law because the police and other security agencies “will never allow any act of hooliganism, political rascality, or lawlessness in any part of the affected States or in any other state across the country,” according to the FPRO. The DIG also emphasized the IGP’s plans to maintain law and order during the elections.
Representatives of the Service Chiefs (Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff, and Chief of Air Force Staff), the Director-General of the Department of State Security, the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, the Comptrollers-General of the Nigerian Immigration Service, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, and the Chief of Defence Intelligence were present at the meeting.
As it was further said in the statement, “Ayuba praised the collaborative efforts of the armed forces and other sister law enforcement agencies, highlighting their role in fostering unity and contributing to the success of past general elections.”
