On Wednesday, the newly-confirmed head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, was warned not to use him as a role model in the battle against corruption by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
During the Senate members’ viewing of Olukoyede, Akpabio made a remark that made the entire House chuckle.
Olukoyede quoted the senate president during a presentation on looking into a corruption issue, but she abruptly halted when she noticed the audience’s displeasure.
“If, for instance, we are looking into the Senate President…” Olukoyede began speaking, but was unable to finish because of the MPs’ attitude.
Akpabio said, “I’m very glad that the nominee wants to use the Senate President as an example,” he added. However, Mr. Nominee, step away from the Senate President for the time being, and look in this direction (indicating the places of opposition lawmakers).
Olukoyede then delivered his speech without referring to anyone by name. If you battle corruption, everyone becomes your opponent, he remarked.
According to reports, the drama could not be unrelated to the fact that Akpabio is facing charges from the EFCC for allegedly misappropriating N108.1 billion.
In April 2021, there were rumors that the former minister of Niger Delta affairs had been arrested for allegedly trying to bribe Abdulrasheed Bawa, the former head of the organization, with $350,000.
