The National Senior Secondary Education Commission’s Executive Secretary has requested that the Federal Government incorporate the NSSEC Gazette Act 23 (2% consolidated revenue fund) in the 2024 Budget.
According to a statement released by the commission on Wednesday, its Executive Secretary, Dr. Iyela Ajayi, made the call recently while paying a working visit to the offices of Senator Lawal Usman, chairman of the Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education, and Mr. Mark Useini, chairman of the Committee on Education (Basic and Services), both of whom are located in Abuja’s National Assembly Complex.
The country’s senior secondary education would be repositioned thanks to the country’s two percent consolidated revenue fund, according to Ajayi.
The commission, along with the Federal Ministry of Education, was working to produce the National Policy on Senior Secondary Education’s final draft, which was revealed in the statement. According to him, this would help to revitalize the senior secondary education sub-sector.
Ajayi continued by saying that the commission had started to receive feedback on the document outlining the minimum standard from various stakeholders, which would eventually be approved by all as the document outlining the minimum standard for that particular sub-sector.
He made a sincere plea for sufficient funding of NSSEC in accordance with financial allocation in order for the commission to fulfill its goal of revitalizing senior secondary education to reach international standards.
According to Ajayi, “This will enable the commission to embark on some crucial assignments such as; carrying out a detailed needs assessment in schools in the various states, updating the database of the senior secondary schools, and capacity development of teachers, which has been grossly hindered as a result of inadequate funding.”
Senator Lawal Adamu, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education, also spoke during the hearing and pledged that the committee would guarantee that the commission’s budget was properly considered.
