Professor Hippolite Amadi has been honored with the 2023 edition of The Nigeria Prize for Science, and President Bola Tinubu has joined Nigerians, academics, and the scientific community in expressing their congratulations.
The Nigeria Prize for Science’s Advisory Board named Prof. Amadi’s groundbreaking research on respiratory technologies for saving newborn babies’ lives as the prize winner for the 2023 competition on Thursday.
His award-winning creation consists of three solar-powered devices: an oxygen splitter system, an oxygen delivery blender system, and a non-invasive neonatal ventilator.
For his ground-breaking respiratory solutions for babies, Professor Amadi, a distinguished professor of medical technology at Imo State University and a visiting professor of medical engineering and technology at Imperial College London, received recognition.
President Tinubu praised this cutting-edge medical solution and expressed his happiness that it has already greatly decreased the cost of neonatal care and saved lives in hospitals that have accepted the use of the solar-powered neonatal ventilator.
The President praised Professor Amadi for using his vast experience in medical engineering and technology, with a particular focus on cheap medical systems, for the advancement of Nigerians and mankind at large.
The President also thanked Nigeria LNG Limited for giving Prof. Amadi the $100,000 prize for introducing the innovation in newborn care.
He emphasized that this action is consistent with the Nigerian government’s commitment to working in partnership with business and academia to advance the country’s economy in key areas including healthcare, education, technology, and innovation.
