Ons Jabeur, the top seed, was eliminated from the WTA 1000 Guadalajara Open on Wednesday after a difficult three-hour match against Martina Trevisan of Italy.
Trevisan, ranked 54th in the world, defeated Tunisian star Jabeur, who had lost his last two Wimbledon final matches, 6-7 (4/7), 7-5, 6-3.
After winning the first set in a tie-break and exploding into a 30-0 lead as she served for the match at 5-4 in the second set, Jabeur appeared to have the match under control.
However, Trevisan came back to break twice in short succession to win the set and tie the match, leaving the world’s seventh-ranked player speechless.
The 29-year-old Italian, who is competing in Mexico this week in search of just her second WTA championship, broke for a 5-3 lead in the final before holding to claim the victory.
In the quarterfinals, Trevisan will play unseeded American Caroline Dolehide. Dolehide beat eighth-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia 6-1, 6-2 to advance.
In other matches on Wednesday, unseeded American Sofia Kenin maintained her stunning comeback by defeating sixth seed Jelena Ostapenko to advance to the round of eight.
Former Australian Open winner Kenin, who last advanced to the WTA 1000 quarterfinals in 2019, secured her spot in the round of eight with a 6-4, 7-5 victory in 1 hour and 44 minutes.
The 2021 US Open finalist from Canada, Leylah Fernandez, will compete against the Moscow-born Kenin, whose ranking fell to 426th last year. In their round of 16 match, Fernandez defeated unseeded American Emma Navarro 6-2, 6-3.
After defeating American Hailey Baptiste 7-5, 6-4, third-seeded Caroline Garcia of France advanced to the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Garcia will take against Victoria Azarenka, the 10th seed.
Veronika Kudermetova, the seventh seed, was defeated by Azarenka in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, to advance to the quarterfinals.
While Camila Giorgi of Italy was eliminated by second-seeded Maria Sakkari of Greece 6-2, 6-2, Emiliana Arango of Colombia advanced unseeded to the quarterfinals.
