Professor Hippolite Amadi, a bioengineering researcher, has received praise from President Bola Tinubu for winning the Nigeria Prize for Science in 2023.
This was said in a statement released on Friday by Ajuri Ngelale, the president’s special adviser on media and publicity.
The President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, joined Nigerians, academics, and scientists in congratulating Professor Hippolite Amadi on winning the 2023 Nigeria Prize for Science, according to the release.
Professor Amadi’s groundbreaking research on respiratory technology to save the lives of Nigerian babies was named the winner of the 2023 edition of The Nigeria Prize for Science on Thursday by the Advisory Board of The Nigeria Prize for Science.
The three winning innovations—all driven by solar energy—include a non-invasive newborn ventilator, an oxygen delivery blender system, and an oxygen splitter system.
These advances have been tested in several Nigerian hospitals and have shown to be efficient and affordable, resulting in a considerable decrease in the cost of newborn care.
Professor Amadi was recognized for his ground-breaking breathing solutions for babies. He is a renowned professor of medical technology at Imo State University and a visiting professor of medical engineering and technology at Imperial College London.
President Tinubu applauds this creative approach to healthcare and expresses his happiness that the newborn care expenses have already been greatly lowered and lives have been saved in hospitals that have used the solar-powered neonatal ventilator.
The President applauds Professor Amadi for using his broad experience in medical engineering and technology, with a particular focus on cheap medical systems, for the advancement of Nigerians and mankind at large.
He said that by keeping more Nigerian infants alive after birth and training them for a brighter future as constructive changemakers and influencers both at home and abroad, this important effort by this brilliant Nigerian scientist would help the country’s population.
“Furthermore, the President expresses his gratitude to Nigeria LNG Limited for giving Professor Amadi the $100,000 Prize for creating the field of neonatal care innovation, highlighting how this action is in line with the Nigerian government’s commitment to working with industry and academia to advance success in vital areas of Nigeria’s economy, such as healthcare, education, technology, and innovation.”
