Pregnancy is not an illness, the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) has urged corps members to serve the country as is required of them.
At the Kogi Annual 2023 Corps Employers Workshop held at the Government House, Lokoja, Mrs. Mofoluwaso Williams, the Kogi NYSC Coordinator, presented a presentation titled, “Tackling Emerging Challenges in Corps Administration through NYSC/Stakeholders.”
Williams advised groups and businesses to prohibit corps members from using any sort of pregnancy as an excuse to avoid carrying out their civic duties to the country.
Every workplace has unique problems, she continued, and the same is true of the several principal locations where corps members are sent for the one year of required service to their country.
Because pregnancy is not a disease, organisations shouldn’t permit corps members to use it as an excuse in any way.
“It should not be tolerated when members of the nursing or pregnant corps use their condition as an excuse for tardiness or rudeness towards officers.”
The coordinator acknowledged that there are issues that employers face, such as absenteeism, slackness, rudeness, and absconding.
She claims that there are instances where a corps member regularly misses work without permission, refuses to arrive at the assigned location, or shows there first before leaving.
We also have slacker corps members who don’t want to work but yet want to get paid for it, as well as those who aren’t willing to do anything extra for the organisation.
“There are also “toxic corps members,” who are only ever interested in their own interests. They argue with coworkers and other staff members and have anger management issues, she said.
Williams urged companies to treat the involvement of corps members seriously and to make sure they help them become competent, dependable, and quality future leaders.
