Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president of Nigeria, was reprimanded by Chief Femi Fani-Kayode over the ex-president’s outburst against monarchs in Oyo state, claiming that the Obidient spirit is now deeply ingrained in the former president. Fani-Kayode is a senior member of the All Progressive Congress, or APC.
In a now-viral video, former president Olusegun Obasanjo reportedly demanded angrily that a few monarchs in the Oyo state stand and greet him, a move that has drawn harsh criticism.
Fani-Kayode criticised the former president for ordering Oyo monarchs to “stand up” and “sit down” in a popular video in response via his verified Twitter account.
His statement said, “I am deeply saddened and utterly mortified by the way in which former President Olusegun Obasanjo lambasted our revered traditional rulers in Oyo state and “ordered” them to “stand up” and “sit down” as if they were children.”
“This is the same OBJ that, once upon a time, displayed his respect, humility and I daresay greatness by bowing, kneeling and prostrating before our monarchs, even when he was President, yet today he talks to them as if they are his garbage collectors and orders them to jump up and down like a molue driver talking to his beleaguered passengers and a motor park tout talking to a bunch of jobless and worthless underlings.”
“We must not take it lightly, and the fact is, by doing what he did, he spat in all of our faces,” said the speaker.
His actions and remarks are a major affront to the Yoruba people and our ancient institutions, and they violate our moral standards.
“Because of my unwavering love, respect, and reverence for Baba OBJ, I am compelled to be gentle and restrained in my criticism of him on this and so many other issues.”
Given that I happily served in his government, this is much more true.
However, his support for Peter Obi during the most recent presidential election as well as his affiliation with him have degraded and demonised him in the eyes of the majority to such a level that it has become sad and shameful. It is also unjustifiable.
“How can a man who spent his life fighting for a united Nigeria support Peter to be president when he is a dishonest man and a religious bigot?
The eighth wonder of the universe is the fact that the great OBJ is currently a blazing Obidient. It is utterly mind-boggling and makes absolutely no sense.
The eighth wonder of the world is that the mighty OBJ has transformed into a burning Obidient. It is simply mind-boggling and makes no logic at all.
The Obi spirit, which is now deeply ingrained in him, was at action when OBJ insulted our traditional rulers in Oyo state yesterday, as was evident from what we saw.
He was at an event in Awka when some Igbo leaders called the Yoruba race “political rascals” without receiving a response from him. Now, he has the audacity and effrontery to order our traditional rulers to hop around like yo-yos and clowns.
It’s too much, Baba. The few of us that still care about and respect you kindly ask that you respect yourself and stop embarrassing us.
The former president, however, has admitted that the state governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, was the cause of his purported action due to their alleged disrespect of the Oyo monarchs.
