A recent report claimed that Nigeria’s leading telecommunications provider, Airtel Nigeria, has a deal with WATT Renewable Corporation (WATT) to deliver more than 32 MW of installed solar PV plus storage over 600 cell sites.
The story is false, according to a statement from Femi Adeniran, Director of Corporate Communications and CSR located in Nigeria.
The press report that WATT Renewable Corporation received this national contract from Airtel Nigeria is false, according to Adeniran.
Adeniran said that as a proof-of-concept for WATT’s Energy-as-a-Service offering, the company’s cooperation with WATT was restricted to just 30 sites.
He added that 18 of the 30 sites that were commissioned are already operational.
Adeniran also reaffirmed Airtel Nigeria’s dedication to environmental objectives and its pursuit of Net Zero targets throughout its operations.
