The final three nominees for the coveted cash prize have been revealed by the advisory board for the Nigerian Prize for Literature.
Obari Gimba, Abideen Abolaji Ojomu, and Henry Akubuiro, writers of “Grit,” “The Ojuelegba Crossroads,” and “Yamtarawala (The Warrior King),” respectively, were the three authors whose names were on the shortlists.
According to sources, the names were reduced to 11, and on August 6 a discussion on the authors and their works was conceptualised at the Muson Centre, Onikan. The screening procedure that would choose the winner included the book party.
Ade Adeniji, Victor S. Dugga, Obari Gomba, Cheta Igbokwe, Christopher Anyokwu, Abuchi Modilim, Abideen Abolaji Ojomu, Bode Sowande, Olubunmi Famioni, Henry Akubuiro and Olatunbosun Taofeek were among the 11 longlist participants at the event.
Author legend Professor Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo, who serves as the chair of the Nigerian Prize for Literature Advisory Board, revealed the shortlists via a press release yesterday.
“Dear literature lovers, it is with great pleasure that I announce the three shortlists for the Nigerian Prize of Literature’s 2023 competition.
‘Grit’ by Obari Gimba, ‘The Ojuelegba Crossroads’ by Abideen Abolaji, and ‘Yamtarawala (The Warrior King)’ by Henry Akubuiro are the three plays that each made it to the coveted shortlists and each embody the genuine essence of dramatic essence.
The judges praised “Grit” as a fantastic piece that goes beyond its bounds. Its construction and craftsmanship are nothing short of brilliance, and its pages include engrossing anecdotes that unquestionably leave an unforgettable impact.
The judges of “The Ojuelegba Crossroads” were particularly moved by its in-depth examination of the political system. It is crucial that the play may address problems with decision-making and common challenges.
“‘Yamtarawala’ captivated judges’ attention with its dramatic turns, making it suitable for both the stage and the film. As the story progresses, a strong sense of participation and excitement is evoked.

The combined cash award for the three winners will be $100,000 USD.
