The most recent military revolution on African territory, which took place in Gabon on Wednesday, has been dubbed “worrisome” by former vice president Atiku Abubakar.
Atiku, the PDP’s candidate for the 2023 elections, asked African leaders to deal with the underlying issues that have led to the current wave of coups throughout the continent.
This was said by the former vice president via an X post on Thursday in response to the most recent coup in Gabon, which is the eighth in Africa since 2020.
He urged the leaders of the continent to allow for diplomacy while they considered the problem.
“The Gabon coup is denounced. Everything should be done to enthrone, foster, and protect democracy since it is the preferable form of government.
“The ECOWAS and African Union authorities should provide a window of diplomatic engagement that would allow the soldiers to return to the barracks, as I advised in the case of the Niger Republic.
“With the most recent coup, there have been eight military coups in Central and West Africa since 2020. This is concerning and needs reflection.
We might need to concentrate on treating the sickness rather than the coup-causing symptoms.
