The negative effects of contemporary technology have grown more obvious as society develops in the digital era, particularly as instances of revenge porn continue to climb.
A number of well-known people in Nigeria have dealt with the upsetting circumstance of their private images or videos getting popular online. Celebrities like Tiwa Savage, Oxlade, and Empress have recently had the sad experience of having their private footage leaked by unauthorised means.
It goes without saying that a viral sex video might have long-term effects on a person’s image and career, even though the majority of these celebrities have been able to move past the uncomfortable circumstance.
Here are five strategies to prevent your private images or videos from being posted online.
- Look for hidden cameras.
While people may refrain from recording their private moments on camera, dishonest partners may still invade their privacy by placing cameras in places where they shouldn’t. Therefore, it’s important to carefully examine places like hotel rooms before having personal interactions there. Cut off all light sources in a room to search for hidden cameras. Then turn on the camera on your smartphone and look around the space. Pay attention to windows, clocks, and lampposts. The majority of cameras employ infrared light, which, if it’s present in the space, will show up as a red dot on your phone’s screen.
2. File encoding
Encrypting such images or video files is another approach to stop naked content from leaking online. For the folders where they are kept, create strong passwords to prevent unauthorised access. Additionally, you may employ encryption software, which converts your files into incomprehensible code that can only be viewed with the right encryption key. This increases security by adding an additional layer, making it more difficult for unauthorised parties to access and distribute your confidential data.
3. Boost digital device safety.
Make an effort to create strong passwords, passcodes, or biometric identification techniques like fingerprint or face recognition if you save private movies or photographs on your devices. Additionally, make sure your social media accounts have two-factor authentication so that no one else can access your private communications.
4. Refrain from sharing graphic images and videos.
Sharing explicit files with no one at all is a further effective technique to stop leaks. Many people end up watching revenge porn after having their confidence betrayed by a close spouse. Even if you trust the recipient, it is always crucial to remember that once you send nude images or videos, you lose control over how these assets are utilised.
5. Online Security
Use preventative digital security techniques to make sure that unauthorised individuals cannot access your gadgets. Never divulge the passwords to your gadgets or accounts. Be cautious while installing applications, browsing websites, or clicking on links coming from unidentified sources. Always be sure to use antivirus software to safeguard your gadgets from threats. It is crucial to remember that uploading someone else’s obscene films or photos online is illegal in Nigeria. The sharing and publication of messages that are “pornographic or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character” in order to “annoy, inconvenience, danger, obstruction, insult, injury, criminal intimidation, enmity, hatred, ill will or needless anxiety” to another person is punishable under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc) Act 2015.
According to Section 24 of the Act, (a) anybody who knowingly or intentionally sends a message or other matter through computer systems or networks that is excessively offensive, pornographic, or of an indecent, obscene, or threatening nature, or causes any such message or matter to be delivered; or
(b) he sends a message that he knows to be false with the intent of causing another person distress, inconvenience, danger, obstruction, insult, injury, criminal intimidation, enmity, hatred, ill will, or needless anxiety and is guilty of violating this Act. He faces a fine of up to N7, 000,000 or a term of imprisonment of up to three years, or both, upon conviction.
As a result, a victim of revenge porn can report the offender to the police and seek help from sexual assault referral centres.
