Hon. Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, has urged attorneys to preserve the values of justice and the rule of law since they serve as bulwarks of hope and protectors of the constitution.
He asserted that it is their duty as legal professionals to uphold the principles of justice, the rule of law, and equity.
When his former classmates from the University of Calabar’s Faculty of Law, class of 1998, paid him a courtesy call on the sidelines of the Nigerian Bar Association’s (NBA) current national conference in Abuja, Kalu made the submissions.
The deputy speaker, who nostalgically reflected on their time in school, noted that the university had equipped them for their current responsibilities.
He urged them to continue serving as sincere and deserving representatives of the institution.
My dear friends and distinguished colleagues, fellow graduates of the University of Calabar’s law class of 1998, Kalu said.
It’s an honour and a joy to have my dear classmates pay me this courtesy call, and I want to thank you all for coming. I recognise everyone of you.
What you did today demonstrates that I am a prophet with integrity in my community. In politics, you often get dragged through the muck. One of them was the fact that I did not attend school. You must have read it countless times, I’m sure. And I appreciate the class representative’s lines. It states that anyone who is unsure should visit us.
“We can be identified, and so can our organisation. They can visit and check. Nothing compares to how happy I am to see you and the faces I haven’t seen in a very long time.
“I’m pleased with some of you for going on to become so many things for so many people and our country.
“It gives me great pleasure to think back on our time together at the University of Calabar. Those were formative years, marked by hard work, friendship, and a common desire to become attorneys.
In addition to helping us pass tests, some of the principles they instilled in us during our legal education also equipped us with the morals and knowledge we would need in the future.
“As members of the legal profession and graduates of this prestigious college, it is our duty to promote the values of justice, the rule of law, and equity. We must protect our constitution and act as rays of hope.
“Through visits like these, I implore each of us to reaffirm our commitment to one another and deepen our relationship. Let’s take advantage of this meeting to encourage teamwork and networking among us.
“We are representatives of this outstanding university as well as graduates of the law school at the University of Calabar.
We live in a country where a person’s character and competency should be considered when choosing who fills a post. not only your tribe, religion, or political party’s colours or the way your tongue sounds. For the development of our country, it should be you and the contributions you make.
“We must take all necessary measures to protect the honour and integrity of that venerable institution. technology-driven era. The ability to stay in touch with one another has never been easier, so I urge everyone to do so. offer contact information, stay in touch, and offer your knowledge, experiences, suggestions, and advice.
“You will have access to me in the same way that you did when we were both students at the University of Calabar.
“I certainly hope to say that of you. I pray that God raises each of us to greatness so that we may all work towards a better future for Nigeria. I want to thank you once more for coming today, and may our alma mater, the university of Calabar, continue to be a shining example of superior legal education.
As one of the brightest members of the Unical class of 1998, I gratefully accept this lovely honour, which I dedicate to you. We will accomplish more in the future working together, I’m confident.
The attorneys promised to stand by the deputy speaker in any situations where he would want their help, while also wishing him success in his term.
