Abia State Governor Alex Otti has offered explanations for why his government chose to include the private sector in waste management.
The Governor added that the strategy was intended to create a very effective waste management system for Abia through his Senior Special Assistant on Due Process, Dr. Oluebube Chukwu.
According to reports, Otti proclaimed a state of emergency on May 29 during his inauguration speech over the rubbish that had previously physically taken over several roadways in the state, particularly in Aba and Umuahia.
Although more progress is still needed in this area, waste management has significantly improved since that time as most of the trash mounds that blighted the streets have vanished.
The Governor’s Aide responded to inquiries from journalists in Umuahia by stating that the goal of producing “a cleaner and healthier Abia” was what motivated the inclusion of the private sector in developing a sustainable waste management system.
He described a step-by-step process for enlisting the assistance of the business sector, noting that the first stage has been effectively finished as bids have appeared.
He claims that the state has divided the successful bids for waste management contracts into three groups: preferred, reserved, and second reserved bidders.
He said that the favoured bidders, who ended up being the winners, were being contacted right now, and that their engagement letters were being examined.
The Governor’s Aide made a suggestion that the current emergency waste management taskforce would soon be released of its responsibilities to help with the transition to private sector participants, who would further advance the state’s goal for reconstruction.
The recommended bidders, or the victors, are presently getting invitations to a meeting, and each of the six preferred bidders’ letters of engagement is being reviewed.
They will get invitations to a meeting this coming week, where the offer letter will be given and the service standard will be addressed.
“Negotiations will be completed during the meeting so that they may start working right away.
He asserted that the Otti government was dedicated to improving Abia’s environmental cleanliness.
He said that Abia will soon become the cleanest state in the nation because to the new plan the governor had developed.
He said that additional benefits of private sector involvement in garbage management include improving public waste areas, generating employment opportunities, enhancing the state’s economy, and enhancing the state’s cleanliness.
