According to President Bola Tinubu, the nation cannot continue paying its debts with around 90% of its income.
Tinubu bemoaned the fact that the country would be doomed if the current trend continued.
“It’s unfortunate that most houses in Nigeria don’t have access to power. Although it is not a humiliating condition, poverty is nevertheless unacceptable. At the Nigerian Bar Association’s (NBA) annual conference’s opening ceremony on Sunday in Abuja, Tinubu emphasised the need to abolish it.
With over 90% of our revenue going towards debt servicing, can we continue? We cannot continue down that road because it leads to ruin. We must decide on difficult options.
He said that his government will have to undertake difficult changes in order to improve the country’s situation.
The former governor of Lagos asserts that Nigeria must be prepared to make the difficult decisions necessary to put the nation on the path of progress, even if the early changes may be unpleasant.
“Without the reforms we have started, we cannot have the country we want. We must carry our country to its enormous destiny, even if it will be hard in the beginning and for a short while.
“Neither you nor I are the focus of this. In a statement released on Sunday, Tinubu’s media assistant Ajuri Ngelale described him as stating, “It is about our yet-to-be born generations, for whom we must leave a great and prosperous country.”
The former governor of Lagos State also advised the audience that Nigerians need to change their attitude to make the country great.
“You have knowledge. I’m eager to learn. Why do we still lack while being so fortunate? It’s imperative that we alter both our thoughts and our attitude. We accuse our country and its former presidents,” he stated.
“We frequently lament the past. Is that the answer? No! Let’s be resolute and forward-thinking! God has provided for our needs. To make our nation great, we must work arduously and resolutely, and that starts with those of you who are sat here with me.
