The Edo State Government has voiced its concern with the Federal Government’s response to Governor Godwin Obaseki’s comment about President Bola Tinubu’s economic strategy.
According to reports, Obaseki said that the withdrawal of gasoline subsidies and foreign exchange reforms implemented by Tinubu’s administration had made life more difficult for Nigerians on Thursday when speaking to media in Benin.
Through the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the FG responded to Obaseki’s statement, claiming that the governor was attempting to divert attention away from his “poor performance” at the state level. The FG noted that the governor had skipped meetings of the National Economic Council, or NEC, under Tinubu’s administration.
Chris Nehikhare, the commissioner for communication and orientation for the Edo State, responded to the FG in a statement on Sunday by saying, “It is unfortunate and sad that the Federal Government now wants to gag citizens, and even a popularly elected governor, from speaking truth to power, and expressing himself in light of the perilous times we have fallen into.”
“The assertion that the governor skipped NEC sessions is demonstrably incorrect. The records exist to support this statement.
