Omar Touray, the president of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), reaffirmed that neither a war declaration nor any invasion plans have been made by the regional group against the people of the Niger Republic.
Touray, who announced this on Friday while speaking to press in Abuja, emphasised that while sanctions had been triggered, including lawful force, the use of military force was still on hold.
He claims that ECOWAS is optimistic that all diplomatic efforts would result in constructive action on the junta’s part as work on getting the force ready for deployment, in case it becomes necessary to use such force, continues.
According to the president of ECOWAS, the community would not support a coup d’état, therefore “it is not too late” for the military junta to change its mind.
He also called on the General Abdourahamane Tchiani-led junta to restore civilian authority as quickly as feasible and warned that the three-year transition was untenable.
