According to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Nigeria is the seventh most mobile phone- and internet-permeable nation in the world.
This was announced on Thursday in Abuja at the “Emerging Technology Forum” for stakeholders in the telecoms sector by NCC Executive Vice-Chairman, Umar Danbatta.
In order to maximise the social and economic impacts of the digital era, according to Danbatta, digital transformation is a global necessity as evidenced by the data collected by the Network Readiness Index (NRI) team.
Abraham Oshadami, the Commission’s Head of Spectrum Database Management, spoke on behalf of Danbatta and said that the NRI had examined the performance of 131 economies in terms of their use of technology (infrastructure), people, governance, and effect.
Information and communication technology (ICT) effect and role are measured using the NRI metric.
In his words, “Nigeria is a telecommunications powerhouse, accounting for 82% of telecom customers and 29% of internet consumption on the continent.
“Our nation is seventh in the world for mobile phone usage and elevenst for internet penetration.
“Global data from the NRI team demonstrates that digital transformation is a must for leveraging the social and economic benefits of the digital era.
Despite these impressive numbers, we are ranked 109th out of 131 nations in the Network Readiness Index for 2022, which is both demanding and disheartening.
According to him, navigating the change age calls for innovation, wise investments, and an ecosystem that promotes progress.
