The administration of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka has demoted certain instructors who are suspected of sexually harassing pupils.
Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, the university’s special adviser on public relations and special duties, who verified the promotion, disproved social media rumours that university students had recently launched a protest against sexual harassment at the institution.
However, Ojukwu omitted to provide the breakdown of the total number or the names of the academics that were demoted.
The Nnamdi Azikiwe institution Awka Management has been made aware of a social media post that claimed female students at our institution were protesting sexual harassment by university instructors, according to a statement released by Ojukwu on Friday. It is crucial to note that there was absolutely no protest at the campus.
“However, a probe into claims of sexual harassment by several instructors is still continuing.
The impacted lecturers were abruptly fired from their official posts, and the affected departments received letters of severe reprimand from the Vice-Chancellor.
“Unfortunately, the students who reported sexual harassment refused to appear before the inquiry panel to provide testimony.
“The Vice Chancellor also called a meeting of the concerned departments, where he voiced the institution’s unhappiness and issued a warning to academics and employees not to do anything that would damage the reputation of the university.
He forewarned that incompetent staff members would face harsh punishment from the university administration, especially if they were molested or sexually harassed our pupils.
Therefore, the Vice-Chancellor has established a dedicated phone line so that students may report any type of staff harassment, including sexual harassment.
“He further assures students of the university’s renewed commitment to safeguarding them and treating all allegations of sexual harassment with the seriousness and confidentiality they require.”
