The untimely death of Ayomide Akeredolu, a 500-level fellow, in the university’s medical centre has sparked protests from students at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, Ondo state.
The University Health Centre’s services have drawn criticism from the irate students.
As the students vented their anger at the murder of their colleague, drivers were left stalled on the Akure/Ilesa route for hours.
According to reports, the victim’s fellow students took him to the hospital on Thursday night around 8:30 p.m. after finding him collapsed in his dorm.
According to a student who talked with news reporters in Akure, the victim died in the university health unit due to inadequate care.
He claimed that while the victim was receiving medical attention at the health clinic, there was no power supply.
He said, “While the medics were treating him, we had to be using our telephone torch.
Additionally, earlier yesterday, the health centre turned away a student who was in need of emergency care and was in a severe condition—a previous vice president of FUTASU—because she didn’t have her identity card.
“The kids are protesting peacefully to voice their unhappiness. Upgrades to the university’s health care facility were sorely required.
But in a prompt reaction, the university, which lamented the student’s unexpected death due to a sudden illness, said he had been delivered dead to the medical centre.
The victim “slouched in his hostel and all attempts and medical intervention at resuscitation even at the Health Centre failed with the doctors recording that he was brought in dead,” the institution’s Director of Corporate Communication, Adegbenro Adebanjo, said in a statement.
The student was taken to the health centre at around 8:50 p.m. on Thursday, August 24, 2023, according to the on-call physician.
“He was delivered dead. He was unsuccessfully revived with cardiopulmonary resuscitation and oxygen treatment.
The on-call medical staff then drove him in the university ambulance to the UNIMED Teaching Hospital, Akure.
“It’s understandable that the unfortunate Development has shattered his friends and coworkers. At this extremely challenging moment, the management meets them in the morning. Our kids, as well as the grieving family, are in our thoughts and prayers.
“May the Good Lord grant his soul eternal rest and the strength to bear the irreparable loss to his family and friends,”
However, on Friday, August 25, 2023, students started a protest because they allegedly had certain reservations about the University Health Centre’s services.
It’s crucial to note that the protest had nothing to do with the student’s passing.
“The Student Representatives brought up several gaps in the process of getting services at the Health Centre at a meeting with management that the Vice Chancellor requested.
“The Management ordered that urgent corrective action be done to address the lacuna and other concerns identified by the students during the meeting.
The remedial actions will be periodically assessed to make sure they are being followed exactly and to the pupils’ satisfaction, according to Adebanjo.
