At the Presidential Villa in Abuja, resident Bola Tinubu is now holding talks with a group of Nigerian Muslim leaders led by Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi.
For the Economic Community of West African States, a group of Islamic leaders recently offered to communicate with the coup leaders in the Niger Republic. They received authorisation and actually spoke with General Abdourahamane Tchiani of the junta.
At the Presidential Villa, the Ulammas will update President Tinubu, who serves as the head of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, on the results of their visit to Niger and the political situation there.
Recall that the ECOWAS had taken action to express its opposition to the military coup in Niger by enforcing a number of sanctions and issuing an ultimatum that it warned may result in a military reaction.
The Ulammas, who reject going to war with the Nigerien military as threatened by ECOWAS, claimed that in addition to the terrible repercussions of war, they were required by their religious beliefs and the Quran to first try to resolve the situation via negotiation.
