Customers in the South-East have been warned by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Plc about scams involving prepaid meter upgrades.
The corporation declared that consumers will not be charged for the planned upgrading of Standard Transfer Specification prepaid metres in its network.
Anambra, Imo, Enugu, Abia, and Ebonyi states’ energy distribution is the responsibility of the EEDC.
This explanation was provided in a statement on Thursday by Mr. Emeka Ezeh, Head of Corporate Communications at EEDC.
Ezeh claimed that the company’s knowledge concerning the actions of some unscrupulous individuals who are extorting naive clients in the pretence of updating their metres made the warning essential.
Customers shouldn’t fall for these tricks, he said, because there would be no fees associated with upgrading a customer’s meter.
“The process of upgrading will be as simple as punching the Key Change Tokens—which will be given to customers along with the credit token when they go to recharge their meters—into the metre,” he added.
“We simply informed our consumers of this activity as a matter of obligation, and we’re pleading with them to make sure that their prepaid metres are upgraded by November 24, 2024.
Earlier this month, EEDC informed its customers that, unless they are updated, all Standard Transfer Specification prepaid meters would stop accepting credit tokens by November 24, 2024. An operation that will have an impact on all prepaid meters that are STS compliant worldwide.
Customers of EEDC are recommended to update their metres before the deadline of November 24, 2024, as unupgraded metres won’t take new tokens after that date but will continue to function until the credit already put in them runs out.
It is crucial to remember that credit tokens that were bought but not placed into the metre prior to the update will be useless after the upgrade.
Reiterating that the update is free of charge and without charge to clients, he continued by urging them to maintain their composure and that EEDC would adequately communicate the process and modalities for the upgrade.
