The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FCT FEMA) has reported that a two-story structure on Lagos Street in Garki village, Abuja, collapsed on Wednesday night.
According to reports, an undefined number of people were murdered when a multi-story structure collapsed in the Federal Capital Territory, or FCT, of Abuja.
However, Mrs. Nkechi Isa, the agency’s head of public affairs, said in a statement released on Thursday in Abuja that 37 people were saved alive while two others suffered fatal injuries.
Isa said that a rescue effort was underway to look for further victims.
The FCT FEMA, Federal Road Safety Corps, and FCT Command of the Nigerian Police were working together to rescue and evacuate people, she continued.
“On Wednesday night, the two-story structure, which was used for both residential and business reasons, collapsed.
“FCT FEMA Search and Rescue Team are awaiting excavators to intensify the search to ensure that no victim is left in the rubble of the collapsed building,” she stated.
Dr. Abbass Iddriss, the agency’s director general, praised the efforts of all parties involved, particularly the community members who were labouring arduously to physically free imprisoned people.
