Following the massacre of five persons by suspected herders on Friday, protesting Benue women set up a barricade on the federal highway connecting Makurdi, Laafia, and Abuja.
Five persons were reportedly slain in two separate attacks by suspected herdsmen in two communities in the Guma Local Government area of Benue State, according to a local who only went by the name Sunny.
Three persons were slain Thursday night at Ngban, and two more were killed at Nyian, according to Sunny, who spoke to our journalist on the phone.
Five individuals were slain by suspected herders, according to Guma Local Government security official Christopher Waku, who confirmed the incident.
Waku stated, “Since this morning at five o’clock, our women have flocked to the Makurdi/Abuja federal highway, where you can hear them singing heartfelt songs in the background. At this time, neither vehicles coming from Abuja nor Makurdi can move.
“The killing of five people last night (Thursday) and this morning (Friday) is being protested by the women.
“Two people were slain at Nyian this morning and three people were killed at Ngban last night,” he continued. “The women have stated they won’t leave the road unless the governor arrives and talks to them. I’m currently waiting for the governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, on the street where ladies are protesting.
