The alleged death of a schoolboy by a state security task team is being investigated, according to Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, who has put the wheels in motion.
Abdullahi Abba, also known as Abdallah, a 17-year-old teenager, was allegedly tortured by members of Operation Farauta, a task group of military and police troops tasked with reducing crime throughout the state.
Abdallah, who had allegedly been tortured to unconsciousness, passed away on Wednesday, August 9, after getting care in the hospital for days.
The task force received a complaint from a neighbour on August 5 about a missing phone, which the neighbour claimed he suspected the youngster of stealing. He was then arrested and brutally tortured.
Governor Ahmadu Fintiri directed the state commissioner of police to look into the circumstances surrounding Abdallah’s death, as was communicated to newsmen on Friday.
The governor’s response followed claims that Operation Farauta personnel may have tortured Abdallah to death and are attempting to cover up the case, according to a statement signed by Fintiri’s Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou.
According to the statement, “Governor Fintiri, who expressed regret over the unfortunate development, has directed the Police to launch a thorough investigation into the case in order to pursue legal action against those involved if anything dubious is found.”
The statement claims that “the Governor is appealing for calm as an investigation is ongoing.”
According to the statement, the governor expresses sympathy for the bereaved family and assures them that every Adamawa citizen’s life is valuable, and that the government will work to see that justice is done.
